Outdoor Movement 5 Ways
Warm weather brings a certain temptation to head outside for some fresh air. It’s a nice opportunity to stretch the legs, breathe in the freshness of the air and grab some extra vitamin D from the peeks of sunshine that pop through. Before heading out to become familiarized with nature, consider incorporating unique methods of movement into a daily exercise regimen. Outdoor movement can benefit the body while allowing moments to take in the sights and sounds of the season. Take a chance this season, switch up your routine and get moving outdoors!
5 ways to move outdoors:
Cycling
Snatch a bike out of the garage and find a trail. Cycling is a great cardio workout and has the added benefit of working lower body muscles that aren’t used on a normal basis. It is a low impact activity that takes the strain off joints while still allowing for a great workout. Whether you fancy hardcore trail riding or a bike lane on the road, gliding along on a bicycle with the breeze blowing through your hair brings a sense of freedom and fulfillment like no other. Try locating bike trails nearby via Trail Link.
Find an outdoor fitness class
Pop-up fitness classes seem to be all the rage lately. These classes are “popping up” at parks, playgrounds, outdoor school facilities and the like. By offering various types of movement and pairing them with the great outdoors, what’s not to love? There is truly something special about moving outside and definitely worth some investigation. Joining the class with a friend is always a great motivation. Simply do a google search for “pop up or outdoor fitness classes near me” to see if any classes exist in your area.
Playground workouts
Playgrounds aren’t just for kids! This form of exercise makes it easy to bring the kids along while moving, which is an added bonus. Try a circuit workout, set up stations and try to move all parts of your body within the cycle. Think: monkey bar pull - ups, incline push-ups on the slide, reverse leg lifts using the stairs or a platform. Get creative!
“No Equipment Needed” workout
Workouts that are quick, simple, and use minimal equipment have a certain appeal. Body weight workouts can be highly effective and “equipment free” workouts often mirror the muscle movements used on a daily basis. They keep from unnecessarily overloading the muscles too. A few suggestions: pushups, planks, air squats, mountain climbers, lunges and box jumps. For more ideas, head to Youtube or Pinterest.
Hiking trails
Trail hiking might represent a lifestyle that seems more primitive than preferred but what is better than a workout that offers beautiful forests, oceans, rivers and lush greenery? Whether planning a hike with friends or family, hiking is most definitely an activity to do with a group because it adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Make a game plan to check out nearby hikes this season. Hiking can be a bit more strenuous so plan to do some research before heading out on a trail, especially if you’re having kiddos join. Be sure to pack for the elements: sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, bug repellent, snacks and water. Consider using the All Trails website or phone app which provides trail details, trail maps and user feedback.
Use these ideas as starting points for outdoor movement as you enjoy creating new exercise adventures.
